Explain Question: Reflection
Posted April 25, 2011
on:I was quite disappointed at my performance in answering this time’s explain question. One of the thing I have noticed is that I need to be careful when reading the question. Even one letter counts in this question type. For example, I have missed the “s” after diagram. Therefore, I concentrated on one diagram and not even bothered about the second diagram. Because of this, the maximum grade I could get became six. Other than that, it is important to define all terms and talk about the change in price level and real GDP.
“Explain” Question Reflection
Posted February 7, 2011
on:“Explain” questions are asked in paper 1 (a) and paper 2 of the IB Economics HL exam. In these questions, it is necessary to define all the key terms, draw relevant diagrams and explain them; they are mini-essays. Here are several tips to do well in the data response.
Introduction
- rehash the question
- define the key terms present in the question
- state the general structure of the response
Definitions
- integrate definitions of all other key terms
- make sure that the definitions are precise
Diagrams
- draw the diagrams with a pencil
- don’t forget ELOTAA
Explanation
- make your explanation concise yet clear
- do not forget to refer to the diagram drawn
- include every important concepts
- if time allows, give an example
With practice, “explain” questions will not be too much of a burden. Certainly the formative data responses helped me to do well in the summative data response.
